Our Story

Starfish Group was formed in 2009 by founder and Chief Executive Martin Gerrelli. The company’s branding is based around the starfish because of its regenerative qualities which are synonymous with our own ethics. This ultimately delivers our mission of ‘creating better business, homes and communities’.

We believe that our people go the extra mile to generate industry best performance that creates a customer experience to provide the advocacy we need to sustainably build our company. Therefore, to ensure our people continue to deliver excellence as we grow, we ask colleagues to live by our values of professionalism, passion, integrity and innovation every day.

Since our inception, we have delivered strategic advice, housing retrofit and new build homes to customers including Local Authorities, Registered Providers, National Government, tenants, private landlords and home owners predominantly in the North West, Yorkshire and East Midlands regions. From our head office in Chesterfield and our North West office in Ellesmere Port, we deliver concept to completion schemes with highly skilled, personable, experienced and enthusiastic team members.

Our performance is delivered with a clear focus upon the principles of the Social Value Act 2012. At all stages we are constantly striving to improve the social, environmental and economic impact on each of our relationships to ensure that the communities where we work in are in better shape following practical completion. This includes employment of local people (including subcontractors from the community) and suppliers which will ensure that more value is attained for invested £.

We are also passionate about innovating where possible. Examples include the following:

  • Established a JV housing retrofit company where we have taken thousands of families out of fuel poverty, made hundreds of homes flood resilient, significantly reduced the energy demand of communities and charitably reinvesting a minimum of 80p of every £ of surplus
  • Creating our new build development company ( where we are building sustainable homes for sale with a minimum of 60p of every £ of surplus being charitably reinvested
  • Forming partnerships with the in house direct labour teams of Local Authorities and Registered Providers to help them become part of the Starfish supply chain as a precursor to them becoming main contractors in their own right under the close supervision of our team

Having been the lowest tenderer on another job for Yorkshire Housing Starfish stepped in to finish the remaining 6 units on a former Southdale Homes site. Starfish were happy to share risk and displayed a very positive ‘can do’ attitude which enabled the scheme to be re-started a mere 2 months after Southdale went administration. I have no hesitation in recommending them following this really positive experience.
